STATE OF MIND EDUCATION
State of Mind education is the process of teaching the universal operating principles behind people's minds that explain how we tick and how life experience is created moment to moment. The focus is on helping the client understand this phenomenon better through insight and realization, rather than helping them to think, feel, or behave better. The assumption is when one understands better, they tend to do better, regardless of their current situation or diagnosis.
INDIVIDUALS
People's apparent disconnection to their innate health can show up in a variety of ways. Sometimes it manifests as ongoing feelings of depression and anxiety that seem to rule their life. It may show up as a general feeling of stress and overwhelm. There may be a tendency to grasp for better feelings in the world of substances. There may be a sense that they are disconnected from their life purpose. Regardless of the "issue," clearing up the misunderstanding that fuels these problems is much simpler than you might expect, and it doesn't require years of therapy!
Although the foundations taught are central to every client, every 1:1 session is customized and responsive to that individual's specific needs. Sessions are conducted in a relaxing, laid back atmosphere geared toward gaining a more grounded, deeper understanding of the principles behind state of mind. The assumption is that focusing on developing a more solid foundation of understanding naturally leads to across-the-board improvements in life. We see these "improvements" such as more peace of mind, deeper connections in relationships, clarity, and wisdom in everyday life as by-products of understanding, rather than something to learn how to practice or do. To put it another way, better understanding leads to better doing in life.
COUPLES
Very simply, we see a relationship as two individuals relating to each other. Thus the assumption is that helping each individual is the most leveraged way to improve the relationship. Though the initial consultation and intake may include both parties in the session, the bulk of the process involves each person gaining more understanding into their own experience, thus learning to get over their own blind spots that tend to be a barrier for the couple as a whole.
FAMILIES
Sometimes family dynamics can develop in a way that is unhealthy, and often this is only noticeable in the behavior of one of the family members, such as a child. As is the case with couples, we see the functioning of a family as the sum total of each person's level of understanding the state of mind factor. Because of the crucial role parents play, Parent Coaching sessions are usually involved when we work with a family.
PARENT COACHING
Just as in a large business corporation, the parents are the CEO's of the family. Many parents seek help when their child is having behavioral or emotional problems, but most seem to focus on helping the child, rather than looking at how "where they're coming from" as a parent plays into their child's behavior. Of course, "parenting" like any endeavor is empowered or disempowered by the understanding level and state of mind of the parent. Parent coaching assumes that happy, secure parents who are comfortable in their own skin, tend to raise children who are very much the same. Using the foundations taught in State of Mind Education, we help parents become the "thermostat rather than the thermometer". Parent coaching involves drawing out your own creative, common sense solutions in the parenting context, along with strengthening your rapport and connection with the child.
